Project partner meeting at BMEL

On the 31st of August and 1st of September the BASIC Biogas project partners had a meeting at the Fedral Ministry for Food and Agriculture (BMEL) in Berlin.
During the meeting the structure and content of the application to the South Baltic Sea Programme was discussed in detail as well as the roles and responsabilities of the partners.

Meeting with Neringa municipality, Lithuania

On the 22nd of August, Jörgen Held, Pre-BASIC Biogas coordinator, Dr. Andrius Tamosiunas, Deputy Director Lithuanian Energy Institute and Dr. Nerijus Striugas, Head of Combustion Laboratory, Lithuanian Energy Institute visited Ms. Vilma Kavaliova, Chief Specialist, Business and Strategic Development Division  with colleagues, Neringa Municipal Administration.

Neringa Municipality is located on the Curonian Spit, which is included in the UNESCO world heritage list. Algae blooming as a consequence of eutrophication is a big problem and has a negative impact on the tourism to the Lithuanian “riviera” as well as for the quality of life for the locals.

Neringa Municipality has expressed an interest to be associated partner in BASIC Biogas. The final decision is expected at the end of September.

Visit at Solrød Biogas plant

On the 23rd of March 2017, Jörgen Held visited the Solrød Biogas plant. The plant is currently the only facility in Denmark where cast seaweed is co-digested with industrial and agricultural waste.

7,000 tonnes/year of cast seaweed is used as substrate. In this way the beach is kept clean and free from odor of rotting seaweed. In addition nutrients are removed from the sea since the digetstate is used as a fertilizer on the fields surrounding the biogas plant. In fact the Solrød Biogas plant contributes to 72% of the nitrogen reduction target for Køge bay. Anaerobic digestion of maritime substrates in combination with digestate utilization is an efficient way to mitgate eutrophication in the Baltic Sea and a central part of the Pre-BASIC Biogas activities.

Prof. Tyge KjaerProf. Tyge Kjaer with colleagues presented the plant and gave a guided tour in the facility.

Second meeting with Joint Secretariat

On the 13th of March Jörgen Held visited Project Officer Iuliia Kauk at Joint Secretariat South Baltic Sea Programme in Gdansk to discuss the content of the planned BASIC Biogas application.

In the same business trip, meetings with Prof. Jasiulewicz, Koszalin University of Technology and Dr. Robert Aranowski, Gdansk University of Technology took place.

Project partner meeting

On the 7th of November the Pre-BASIC Biogas project partner meeting took place.

Participating organisations were: Danish Gas Technology Centre, Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe, Gdansk University of Technology, Koszalin University of Technology, Lithuanian Energy Institute and Renewtec AB.

The BASIC Biogas proposal was discussed on a both general and in some parts detailed level and the WP-leaders were assigned.

The consortium is open for associated partners of strategic importance for the implementation of the project. South Baltic Sea coastal municipalities, agricultural organisations and other stakeholders interested in anaerobic digestion of manure and aquatic substrates in combination with digestate utilization.

Seminar presentations are now online

The Pre-BASIC Biogas Seminar attracted 65 participants from 11 countries.

12 presentations were given by national and international experts. Focus was on

  • anaerobic digestion of manure and digestate utilization
  • aquatic substrates
  • upgrading of biogas including technology presentations by ETW Energietechnik GmbH, Pentair Haffmans and Hitachi Zosen Inova BioMethan GmbH

Dr. Knud Tybirk, Samsø Municipality gave a presentation on the results and recommendations from the Baltic Manure project and  Danish biogas results from 2016 on manure co-substrates.

Desirée Grahn, Director of Biogas Syd, gave a presentation on the ongoing Biogas 2020 project and results from the recently finished BIOGASSYS project.

Thies Fellenberg
Thies Fellenberg, Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe (FNR) gave an overview of biogas upgrading in Germany.

The seminar chairman, Jörgen Held, concluded that even if manure is used in many commercial installations it’s evident that just a small fraction of the potential is utilized. Anerobic digestion of aquatic substrates has been discussed for several years and it’s good to see that seaweed now is starting to be used in industrial scale plants such as the Solrød biogas plant in Denmark and that we are just in the very beginning of an interesting development. These observations are also good indications that the BASIC Biogas efforts on manure and aquatic substrates in combination with digestate utilization as means to reduce the eutrophication in the Baltic Sea area are spot on.

Visit at Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI)

On the 11th of October, the project coordinator visited Lithuanian Energy Institute in Kaunas. The institute is a Pre-BASIC Biogas project partner and the visit included discussions regarding the BASIC Biogas application to the South Baltic Sea Programme as well as a study tour in the well-equiped LEI laboratories.

The director of innovations at the Enerstena Group, Ralfas Lukoševičius, participated also in the BASIC Biogas discussions.
